Stories from the Road: Des Moines, IA

I am curious as to why in some places, people don’t seem curious to find out what the Empowerment Tour is about.

We were set up at the Greater Des Moines YMCA downtown by the river, and less than a handful of people stopped by. A few blocks away, there were crowds of people at a Farmer’s Market. Several of our team went there to hand out flyers, and again found there was not as much interest as we had anticipated. Though there were plenty of distractions. The Farmer’s Market was compelling for me as well. I enjoyed seeing the lush flowers, abundant produce and an occasional booth with crafts and crowds of people enjoying themselves.

I found the downtown to be more beautiful than I had imagined. The Capital Building has a Golden Dome and there are several low bridges going across the river that runs through the city. We ate lunch at Lucca, a fabulous, sophisticated restaurant. I also noticed some interesting looking shops and am sorry we didn’t have more time to explore the city.

I am reminded that often people are surprised at the beautiful things that come their way-unexpectedly. I know when I look at my life and am noticing the exciting opportunities, events, incredible people I meet, I recognize they may not have occurred if there wasn’t an event I initially perceived as negative.

Being on the Empowerment Tour is an example of that. A major client of mine changed the direction of their business and weren’t focusing on the projects needing what I was providing. I was unhappy about it since I loved the work. However, if it was still going on, I wouldn’t have had the time to participate in this adventure.

It has been my experience and I recall seeing research demonstrating most successful businesses came about as the result of a negative push (a layoff, being fired, etc). I expect the same could be said about career change. In the future, many of the people we are seeing due to layoffs, will have furthered their credentials through online education, by creating more fulfilling work for themselves or starting businesses they had only dreamed about prior to a layoff.

Have you personally created success in your life, that wouldn’t have happened if you didn’t experience adversity? Let me know, I am interested.
