The Career Coaches' Corner

Stories from the Road: Remembering Minneapolis, MN

I got lost in the Mall of America. I expect that happens to lots of people. No wonder! It had five hundred specialty stores, fifty restaurants, seven nightclubs, fourteen movie theaters and an amusement park in the center. Many of the people we see for coaching are feeling lost; countless decisions to make: numerous careers, scores of majors, several possible schools to go to. Much like my eventually finding my way out of the Mall, when a person starts focusing on their skills and interests, a career direction will typically emerge.

Pierre initially started our conversation having no idea what he wanted to do. He was working in a manufacturing setting that would soon be closing down, plus he was feeling too old to do the heavy lifting his job required. When asked what he had thought about he mentioned accounting, since he had done it before. It was clear that there was no passion for it. While we were discussing the state of manufacturing, and that it wasn’t totally disappearing but changing to new technologies, he suddenly realized he always loved electronics. His whole body and outlook changed as he thought about this. On the spot – he was ready to sign up to become an electronics technician.

Felicia, a stay at home mom, came to the session wondering should she become a dental technician since it is a good steady, growing profession, or go into accounting since she had received an associates degree in it many years ago? As we talked, she realized she really loved the arena of math and money. In this situation, it became clear accounting was the preferred choice.

Sometime, it may take awhile to become clear. If you continue to struggle, I recommend trying out various options, shadowing people in the field, possibly volunteering in a setting where it is done, so you can see if it is really for you. If you have had experiences struggling with multiple options, before one emerged, please let me know, I am interested.

While I was in MN, it turned out that my Minnesota friends from Heartland Circle were in town and we gathered together for a delightful dinner filled with great conversation. I enjoyed sharing my Empowerment Tour experience with them.

On another night, the crew had dinner on the deck at Sunset Restaurant on Lake Minnetonka ; a most beautiful setting. We followed this up with a surprise trip to a Go Kart Park. I had my first experience racing. Although I ended up in last place, probably since I had my foot on the brake the whole time, I didn’t mind. It was good for our group to have fun together and it was particularly good for me to stretch and try out something new. Not bad for a granny!
