Stories from the Road: Salt Lake City, UT

During our tour stop in Salt Lake , I became aware of several examples of unintended consequences.

The area around Salt Lake is where the first Intercontinental Railroad was completed.

Although this event was important for the development of our country, the process destroyed many trees, killed buffalo and as a result the lifestyle of the Native Americans was destroyed.

The Empowerment Tour was set up at the Gateway Mall. The Mall is a beautiful open area venue, filled with high-end shops. It is a model renovation. Since people are drawn there to shop and be entertained, many of the downtown businesses couldn’t compete. One notices many empty store fronts.

Our location at the Mall was fun. The Olympic Legacy Plaza has a very unique fountain, where there are water shows every half hour. In between the choreographed shows, it is a delight to watch the children and some adults running back and forth through the columns of water that dance up and down. If you are sitting at one of the benches surrounding the fountain, the consequence can be quite refreshing on a hot day.

Many of the people we talk with who are laid off from their jobs, are finding an unexpected consequence or the opportunity to do what they REALLY want to do with their lives. They have the opportunity to re-invent themselves.

An accountant realizes she was bored and can now learn behavioral psychology with the dream of opening a weight control center. An insurance sales person recognizes that he has a natural skill working with computer technology and recalls it was an earlier dream that was forgotten in the course of his life. An engineer is now looking forward to getting certified as a teacher to influence teens to complete their education.

The juxtaposition of our Tour at the Olympic Legacy Plaza, had me contemplating the ways that being on the career and job search are much like competing at the Olympics. One needs to stand out. It takes persistence and practice with many ups and downs. Online education and coaching are powerful resources to help people gain that edge.
