Stories from the Road: San Francisco, CA

The Empowerment Tour was set up at the Embarcadero YMCA. The location was perfect. The mission of the Y is all about personal development ; …”to enrich the lives of all people in spirit, mind and body” And the name Embarcadero is derived from the Spanish word embarcar, identifying it as the place to embark. Although it is named that due to its location close to the Port of San Francisco, it suggests to me the people who come to see us are ready to embark on a new chapter in their lives.

A middle-aged man who had spent most of his life as a draftsman, realized he would love to work in the culinary field – particularly around the preparation of healthy, gluten free food. A young man with a degree in computer information systems and a strong desire to bring his talents to the healthcare arena was thrilled to learn about the field of health informatics. A 55-year-old woman who serves as an interpreter/translator to the Hispanic Community, is ready to increase her knowledge to help her clients. She is planning to further her education and become a paralegal. These are just a few of the stories of people moving forward in their lives.

I was delighted to be in San Francisco and glad that I had a few hours to explore this most dramatic, beautiful city. I particularly enjoyed the Ferry Building, filled with several intriguing shops and restaurants. It is invigorating to be so close to the water where there is the excitement of people going off on journeys. I am reminded that our Empowerment Tour journey is soon coming to a close.
