Re-Defining Your Career Concept: Pave the Way to a Successful Career Path with Online Learning

Re-Defining Your Career Concept

Men and women can expect to hold more than 10 jobs over a lifetime, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While it comes as no surprise that younger workers hold multiple, short-term jobs, workers of all ages are changing what it means to have—not one—but many—careers.

Older workers are retiring from lifetime careers and starting new part- or full-time jobs. Mid-career individuals are discovering that today’s global and technical workplace requires ongoing growth and change.

A number of factors in today’s work environments are changing the “career concept”:

  • Fast-paced changes in knowledge
  • 24/7 work access via technology
  • Work-at-home opportunities
  • Outsourcing to off-shore employees
  • Lay-offs and unpredictable economy

The traditional view of a career shows a lifetime employee who has progressed through the ranks, from an entry-level position to upper-level management. In this model, retirement is secure with a pension and healthcare. For most of us today, this model has been replaced by something more fluid, flexible—and sometimes scary.

To better understand your own career path, consider the following four career concepts. A career concept identifies a particular pattern of career experience—it shows a path a person can take within an organization or several paths among many organizations. Many of us will end up with a kind of “hybrid career concept” which adapts and changes over time. As you’ll see—some career concepts are better suited for success in today’s dynamic workplace and fluctuating economy.

1. Linear Career Concept

The “linear” career concept is a traditional model in which a person promotes through the hierarchy of an organization. This is often referred to as “climbing the corporate ladder.” A person on this career path may expect to stay with the same organization for 30 years and retire from a top-level position. The only acceptable direction for this person is UP!

The “linear” worker often strives toward leadership roles, and is competitive, achievement-oriented, and concerned with financial and material success.

Familiar linear career paths include:

  1. Banking
  2. Corporate business

The good news? Individuals on this career path are hard working and good at setting and reaching goals.

The bad news? Today’s workplace environments aren’t conducive to lifetime careers and require ongoing flexibility and professional development.

Online Degrees. Want to make that straight line a little curvier? Instead of racing to the top rung of the ladder, consider starting your own small business or exploring a new topic in your industry.

You can still make your way to the top, but take the scenic route and learn some new skills along the way. Enroll in one of these online programs to increase your skill set and broaden what you bring to the table.

  1. Finance

  2. Small Business Management
    http://www.elearners.com/online-degrees/small-business-management.htm

2. Expert Career Concept

The “expert” career concept is another traditional model in which an individual makes a long-term—often lifelong—commitment to a particular field of work or specialty. This individual is the engineer who is the “guru” in her chosen field and to whom everyone seeks out answers. He is the veteran teacher who is a mentor and leader.

Co-workers often wonder, “How do they know all that?” The answer is years and years of hard work and personal development in a chosen field.

The “expert” worker often strives for technical expertise, and is committed, reliable, and concerned with stability and competence.

Familiar expert career paths include:

  1. Engineering
  2. Teaching

The good news? Individuals on this career path are dedicated to their work and care less about perks and paychecks.

The bad news? Today’s workplace environments don’t offer as many “static” occupational fields as in decades past—experts once assumed that a person would enter a field and stay in it until retirement. Rapid advancements in technology and access to knowledge enable many people to become “experts.” Today’s workplace requires ongoing professional development and adaptability.

Online Degrees. Experts are characterized by their dedication to work in a particular field. Explore one of these online degrees to update your résumé and learn cutting-edge skills in your chosen industry. Even experts learn something new everyday.

  2. Educational Technology

3. Spiral Career Concept

The “spiral” career concept is the norm for many people in the workforce today. This model is characterized by discovery, and a person makes lateral changes in their career every 5-10 years. As the name suggests, a spiral career path starts at an entry point into a particular field, and then the worker gradually gains a sweeping, broader set of skills and knowledge over time. Each new job opportunity builds on and expands the worker’s previous career experience.

“Spiral” workers are often creative individuals with a diverse set of skills, and they are motivated by the need for personal growth and development.

Familiar spiral career paths include:

  1. Project management
  2. Consulting
  3. Research and development

The good news? Individuals on this career path are adaptable, flexible and versatile—all necessary traits within the profile of today’s successful worker.

The bad news? There is no opportunity for resting on one’s laurels. There are always new skills and knowledge to learn. This career path requires a person to welcome new beginnings and fresh starts.

Online Degrees. Workers who follow a spiral career path are always moving and exploring new possibilities for success. Register for one of these online programs to round the next curve along your career path.

  3. Science & Engineering
    http://www.elearners.com/online-degrees/sciences.htm

4. Transitory/Roamer Career Concept

The “roamer” is known as the “jack of all trades” who changes jobs frequently, sometimes every 2-3 years. In this model, a person’s jobs generally are not related. It’s the experience and adventure that is important, not gaining expertise in a single area.

The roamer values variety and independence and is not concerned with status or upward mobility. This worker is often a “people person” and thrives on social interaction.

There are no familiar transitory career paths because a roamer’s career path is as unique as the person himself. The roamer may try work in construction for a few years, and move on to drafting and then on to public safety training.

The good news? You thrive on change, so you’re fearless in today’s unstable economy.  Roamers are chameleons that adapt to their environment. They are survivors.

The bad news? You’re frequently the “new kid on the block” so you may be the first to go during lay-offs.

Online Courses. If you are a roamer, the world is your oyster. Everything from IT to design to outdoor conservation may interest you; so individual courses may be better suited for exploring your next career move. Sign up for a course in one of these areas:

  1. Trades & Careers

Finding myself unemployed at 54 and realizing I have no career. I always wanted to help troubled kids. I am good in medical billing, but I don't know enough. It's tough out there and because of my age and lack of school, I am not being hired. What I just read, the good and bad of careers is what I have delt with all of my life. I sure hope there is help out there for people like me.

I am married with two children. My husband just completed his Master's of Education degree only to find out that the state where we live, just chopped their education funding for art teachers - that is what he teaches. Therefore, finding an Art Teacher position has been challenging. Right now, he is unemployed and searching for work - anything. I, too, am looking for work. I realize it is hard times for many people, but it sure doesn't help us either. We had to move in with family just to survive. We are grateful, but want so desperately to be self-supporting. We have two children, too. They are feeling the effects of all this and it is so hard on them. I have been actively searching for work, too, with no success. We have no money for me to return to school to finish my degree and I don't qualify for student loans. This transition is so challenging. Any advice and/or encouragement is welcome. Thanks so much!! I can receive email at rainyridgez@yahoo.com.

It saddens me to read how many of us are on the same boat.

Set loose to sail in some rough seas and not finding any friendly harbors for shelter.

We're turned away for being too old, over qualified, too expensive.

We're look at as more of a liability than an asset.

I don't think many of us middle aged workers ever thought we would find ourselves out of work in our 40's, 50's and some in our 60's.

Within sight or so close to the finish line.

Somehow, we believed in the the system that said work hard, sacrifice, be patient, get ahead, build a career, be loyal to your employer and you'll retire with a pension, benefits and maybe even a gold watch.

Those days are gone and gone for good.

We had good times, and carried on as such, we enjoyed our perks and seniority. We lived good lives.

Many of us, I know I did, exchanged all that for golden handcuffs.

Unfortunately, with that also came complacency and the thought that it would last forever, or at least until we retired.

How strange the truth turns out to be.

Those that once held the firing rifles, now, find themselves in the crosshair of them.

Now there's a new doctrine, and we are told, we need to learn to live with and embrace this new belief system that says that old is expensive, experience doesn't matter, quality is not important, loyalty can only be a one way street! and there's' no time to wait, they want it and they want it now!

We struggle to understand these new mores yet we continue to steadfastly hold on to our inner core beliefs that tell us that Yes, experience does matter!, that quality should always be strived for! loyalty is to be rewarded! that age only brings forth wisdom!,and yes patience is still a virtue!.

Are we oddballs to still beleive that?

Are those values to be discarded as passe and obsolete?

Do we, as people also get discarded or defined as obsolete because of our age? our experience? our time with and cost to our employer? our dedication to excellence? our attempt and strife to build a legacy for our children?

    I don't think so!!!

Yes, there's a whole lot of us and to be exact a whole generation of middle age workers.

Some of us with 20,25,30 or 35 years experience in our related fields. Some of us were leaders, managers, supervisors, decision makers, but mostly dedicated money makers to our corporate bosses, who reaped all the major benefits and all the glory.

That didn't matter to many of us, we just wanted to continue in our career path, we quietly went forth putting our shoulders to the wheel, maintaining the systems in place, moving the process along and getting things done.

In return many of us just wanted to be respected for our experience and knowledge, rewarded for our efforts and dedication or at least just ackowledge positively for our longevity and endurance.

Somewhere down the line, in the last 5 or 6 years those things that once were considered an asset became a liability.

It happened slowly to many, to some it came like a cold fog in the night, you awoke and pop! you were obsolete!

We became like sandbags on the side of of a hot air balloon, in order for them to go higher they needed to drop some sandbags, and someone in finance said "Let's drop the old sandbags first".

So now what's left for us?

As anyone in crisis management knows, you need to act and you need to act fast.Time waits for no one !!

It's time to dust ourselves off and reinvent ourselves the best way we can.

We must cast off any self pity, emotional barrier, or negativity and move forward.

We must realize that yes we are older now, yes it's hard to think straight sometimes, yes it's going to be a challenge.

However; we have something that those fresh out of college don't.

We have patience, discipline, experience, rationality, common sense, we

I mostly it is about enjoying your everyday life and the people that you nurture in your relationships. I love to nurture, but try not to go overboard too much, but it is in my personality.

Everything stated here resonates with my situation as well. I feel as though I'm "reading a broken record" if that were possible. I had the same job for 10 years; a job that I absolutely loved, but it came to a screaching halt about a year and a half ago. Since then, I've had five jobs. You read that correctly, it's not a typo, I typed 5 on purpose. I guess for me, it's hard to find what I lost; no job compares to what I had therefore I find myself very dissatisfied, disappointed, and regretting taking the position. I was laid off from two of the 5 jobs, two I left for a better position/circumstance, and one I left due to horrible working conditions. I guess for me, bottom line is that I'm not really sure what I want to do with my life, so no job seems to be a good fit for me. I need to get my degree and go do what I want to do with it, rather than whatever job happens to pop up that I'm able to do because I don't have my degree.

I am 59 and retired in early '08 after 30 years with the Federal Governemnt. Started looking again for a job because daughter had major car accident and lost her job. I am now supporting both of us and my 2 granddaughters on my small retirement. I just found a job, but it only pays $10/hr! Been told I'm too overqualified, and the telling look of "your too old." I want/need a new career to support my family here in Austin, TX. Want to get another degree or a certificate in property management. That way I get paid for something I would enjoy and we would also have a place to live.

I left my job in 2005 because it was an hour commute and that was the most exciting thing about it. Once I got there, I had to pretend to look busy, and the work environment and morale was lousy. I have received a MS in Management/Leadership in 2008, have tried to start a small business part-time, and have had several part-time temporary, unfulfilling jobs since then. One job I had I worked 3 days, and they informed me that they were reducing my pay and there was no work at the present. Since then, I have been looking for work where I thought I might be qualified and still I am in trouble financially. Not wanting to have a pity party though. I have continued to build on what I have even though it has been a struggle and all I can do at this point is to keep putting myself out there until the right people or company sees the potential in me. My thought for all is to not give up whatever your situation, lean on one another and believe and trust in God. There is a reason He is putting us through the tests that we all are facing. Blessings

I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble but I have a Bachlor's in Business Administration/Information Systems and my MBA in Business Administration/Management. After receiving my Bachlor's I was unable to move into the career of computers because I was told I didn't have the experience. I worked at a bank for 18 years and was laid off from there I went to another bank which was a nightmare (poor management/staff) so I took a job at an investment firm which was a promotion only to be laid off again. I am now a Teacher's Assistant at a Junior High School. While I enjoy the change the pay is awful and I can't advance unless I go back to school. Who would have thought I would have to end up going back to school after all of that? I'm not suggesting that you not attempt to continue your education but I do want to advise you not to count on it alone being the answer to your employment problems. I have been searching for months to no avail. But as some of you stated we must hang in there and trust God. This is only for a season and I'm sure we will see better days real soon. It feels good to find a place where I can vent to and with others who know exactly how I feel right now. Let's hang in there guys.

    Bless You All

It is good to know that you are not alone out here in this economic depression. But one thing I would like to say is that a full ride scholarship is good but if you don't have some type of job or income on the side while going to school you won't make it. The expense of day to day living on top of chilcare and gas to and from class and work can be a burden on top of an already stressful situation.

No I am not crazy; I said that because you got guts to spill out our yearning to the void out there...the universe. That makes you real. And real people got feelings and needs and set back moments and etc. That makes all of us real! I am 55, hoorey!I am an Americorps member, hoorey! I earn a stipend for being an Americorp member of $950/mo, hoorey! Yes, that's the only income I have to live. But I survive this far. I have 1 more year contract with them. At the same time I am enrolling to finish my BS in Human Services/Business Management. I have 16 months before I finished. I paid $59/mo for my tuition and fee. I don't care if I can't afford it or I'm too old, or my high blood pressure or what ever medical disadvantage I have I am getting those degrees. Why, becuase no one will help me, except me. Yes, I can say all the excuses, and my friends and family will all feel sorry for me, but no one will come and clean up my mess except ME. So I am putting up my head, lift up my shoulders and I am cleaning up my mess a little bit one day at the time. Hey, if you want to be my pal, email me at visionmoment@yahoo.com. But please skip the negativisiam do something about your circumstances. It's not easy and it's not going to be sooner when you'll able to get out of the hole, but YOU WILL with gratitutes. It's been 6 months since I start working clean up my mess, how about you? When? Tomorrow is always a brand new day with out any blemish in it, until we get there and mess it up. So what you're going to do about it? The ball is at your court, your front yard, are you going to kick it to the kids, so the kids can play or you going to stump your foot on it and kept it like a sore crouchy or man or woman for the rest of your life? If I were you, I will kick the ball...kick the attitutes, kick the sore crouchy sorry old me, kick the no money (it's real, but tell yourself you are working on it), kick the no job per say (it's real, but diversify, change goal, it won't kill you but put money in the pocket and food on the table. Kick it as far as you can, you can do it. I did it, and still working on every day. Email me if you want to chat. Ta! Ta!

No one wants to hire me either because I am NOT bilingual, and i don't have a Masters degree. I have been working in jobs that are 9.00 an hour. I have a son and a hardworking husband, but we still can't pay the bills. We have a small 900sq foot house, one old car and a dog. I am so thankful of what we do have, but i don't like having my son see us soo stressed out and not have any family time together because we are working so hard. So, I want to change careers and go back to school. It has been hard because I am at default with my school loans i took out for my BA degree. I just got laid off and my husband is working so hard we hardly see him. Anyway, it is just so nice to hear people in the same situation and want to better their life, go back to school but can't because of the money. I want to pusue a Medical Billing degree and was almost there until two months ago. I lost my job and i am barrowing money fro my mom to turn out lights and water on that was shut off yesterday! It feels good to know that I am not the only one that is going through these hard economic times that encompass us today. Although, it saddens me that a LOT of us are in this same situation. I started a non-profit orginization designed to help the youth channel aggression, but I can't seem to get it up and running due to my lack of finances in my personal situation. It's hard to help others when you lack the resources to help yourself. All I can say is that prayer is powerful if you believe in a higher being. This too shall pass, but in the meantime we ALL need to stick together and find a way out of this situation. Let's not be considered "crabs in a barrel", stepping all over each other as we scramble to get out and look out for ourselves, but instead, let's lend a hand to help support each of us by looking out for the person that is behind us once we get ahead. I wish us all much success and I pray for each and every one of us to gain prosperity through this triumphant phase we're encountering. May God bless us ALL.

John Rodill, you could have a career in writing. Your message brought a tear to my eye, I relate completely. I wish the remainder of your message was published here. Ms. Avau Watson: you know what you are talking about. This was a refreshing diversion from my activities today. Empowering in some regards. I know God is in charge and we all have to step out of the boat when the times demand and, sink or swim, we will learn from the experience. Sandra Plankey: thanks for your encouragement. I, too, want to do God’s work everyday. Be productive, not busy. Worry will make us sick. Deal with where we are and what is going on around us to the extent that it is not our circumstance but how we deal with it and get through it. God will not give us more than we can handle and will never leave us. Go back to school? Will it get us our dreams? Who can say but that life is a learning experience and a credit on a record may be the bonus we can utilize when experience is just another word on the resume. Good luck to all and God bless you.

While looking for a Playstation for the tiwn's birthday I stumbled upon the website to apply for the full-tuition paid application to college on-line. I don't believe in chance. This was just what I needed...and I took them up on their offer and applied. I went to an historically-black college in a small town and this seems a great mistake. No one values the time and I effort spent to earn my degree. I had 10 years experience in the managerial field before I entered college learning. I sometimes wish I'd chosen another field of study as well, but I believe that when things get better, it will get better for all of us. Anyone with a degree must strive to stay abreast of new information in their field. Get a subscription to a magazine, strengthen your vocabulary. Just stay positive and ready.

I earned a degree long ago but the U robbed me of it, lost 38 credits & lied about it. I went into business for myself, but lost nearly everything to injuries in a car crash. I believe I need to recoup my losses & regain my BS in order to shore up my micro-corporation's credibilty relative to me in my/our search for partners to build it. I'm handicapped now by an old injury & I'm an Indn so seem to constantly fight myth-conceptions about both instead of having money to work with to get the company out in its markets & producing culturally-appropriate & green jobs for me & other Indns, in a furtherance of my obaghi to heal the Sacred hoop of the world. There's no way I can go to school unless I have financial support, so this appears to be an answer to my prayers. Mitakuye oiasin .. all (are) my relatives.

I have been employed since 1990 in a City position that I thought was safe. I learned earlier this year that longevity and loyalty mean very little in the face of an economic crisis. I was demoted, had to tske unpaid furlough days snd lost over 10,000.00 in income. Some might say and have said at least you have a job , be grateful, but I am financialy struggling, I cannot pay all my bills monthly and have cut back, but stillam falling more and more behind on bills. I am single there is no second income in my household. I was laid off from my parttime job and lost an additional 7,000 per year so 17,000 down and headed for bankruptcy, I've decided to go back to school and reinvent myself. I will be 52 in a week and this is really scaring me. I TRULY HOPE THIS IS NOT A SCAM WHERE I recieve a hundred emails from places that offer online degrees but at a cost I cannot afford.I have no extra money.

I have read a lot of the comments posted to this website and it saddens me to see that I am not alone in the struggle to make ends meet. My husband is a US veteran and when he came back from overseas in 1990, found a job at a local heating and air company. He devoted 10 years of his life to this company and along the way, created a family with me. After the birth of our second son, he was terminated from his job because it was a financial decision. I was forced to work full time and he went back to school. He graduated two years ago with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Networking and has not been able to find a job yet. We have three children together and one of them has gotten married and started a family of her own. God bless her family. My other two children have had to live without many things due to our financial situation and it breaks my heart. We are part of the crowd that falls in the cracks. I don't make enough money to pay all of the bills, make the mortgage, car note, insurance and buy food to feed my family, but according to federal guidelines, I make too much to qualify for any assistance. How is this? My question still hasn't been answered! The only thing I can think to do is make another attempt at a higher education and hope that it helps me financially. Please pray for us.

Now is the time to do that. 4 out of the 5 of my children have graduated from or are currently in college, so they know the importance of education. We have something to give to the working community that can not be easily found. We have wisdom, experience and a desire to do the best we possibly can. More important we are open to change. We can, we do and we have. Take a look back and see how far we all have come to this point in our lives and the changes we have made. Thing will get better, just keep your faith and believe.

Ephesians 6:10-18 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with the truth,Having put on the breastplate of righteousness,And having shod your feet with the preparation of the Gospel of Peace,Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one,Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one, And take the helmet of salvation, And the sword of the spirit, which is the Word of God.
