About The College of St. Scholastica

The College of St. Scholastica (CSS) is a Catholic Benedictine institution and the only independent private college in northeastern Minnesota. The College offers online bachelor's, master's and certificate programs across the fields of education, business technology and the health sciences.

The College was founded in 1912 by a group of pioneering Benedictine Sisters who offered college courses to six young women. Today, St. Scholastica educates more than 3,250 men and women and has graduated more than 14,000 alumni.

The College of St. Scholastica has five campus locations in Minnesota and is accredited to offer online courses across the nation. CSS repeatedly tops U.S. & World Report list for "America's Best Colleges in the "Tier 1" of Midwestern Universities-Master's. CSS was also selected in the Princeton Review's 159 institutions it recommends in its "Best in the Midwest" section of its online publication: "2009 Best Colleges: Region by Region."

Career Opportunities

The College of St. Scholastica offers very strong programs in Healthcare Informatics and Information Management (HIIM), IT Leadership and Education.

Job outlook for the HIIM field is growing faster than average. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics "Employment of medical records and health information technicians is expected to increase by 18 percent through 2016—faster than the average for all occupations." The same is true for IT professionals. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics states that these jobs are expected to grow by 37 percent through 2016, again much faster than average for all occupations.

St. Scholastica graduates have a head start in these fields because of the excellent reputation that CSS alumni enjoy in these professions. Many of the graduates have assumed leadership roles at the local, state, and national levels.

The demand and growth in these fields means that the time to advance your career options is now. Growth in these fields comes with the choices in work settings, types of positions, and security, knowing that there is a well-paying and prestigious position waiting for you upon graduation.

"I have nothing but good things to say about the distance learning undergraduate program at St. Scholastica. As a student in the program I have experienced nothing but professionalism from knowledgeable individuals who run a terrific program. I'm so glad I chose St. Scholastica when I decided to further my education."

— Selenna Moss, HIIM Bachelor's Program

"I've just accepted the position of Director of Research Operations in the Division of Biomedical Informatics at the Mayo Clinic. Without your help in completing the online Master of Arts in HIIM, this position would not have been possible! I just wanted to take a moment to say thanks."

— Peggy Paulson, M.A., HIIM Program

"The online IT Leadership program allowed me to gain valuable experience and knowledge in the field. I was able to learn from teachers who are currently working in the field and I enhanced my leadership abilities at the same time. After receiving my master's degree from St. Scholastica, I received a promotion and pay raise.

"I commend the entire CIS department at CSS for the dedication you show to the students at St. Scholastica. You not only contributed to my academic growth, but provided me with the support I needed to develop the business and personal skills that will make me successful in the future."

— Luke Konrath, M.A., IT Leadership Program

"That the Education Media & Technology program could be completed online was a key selling point. I could not have made all the trips (for classes and course work) and still maintained my full-time job, family life and outside commitments. This flexibility certainly made the course work more manageable."

— Laurel L. Tekautz, M.Ed., Educational Media & Technology Program
