Online Degree Programs From Western Governors University
Online degrees based on your skills and knowledge.
Your competence is the ultimate focus of every degree program at Western Governors University. The university emphasizes mastery of essential skills and knowledge in your field, basing progress toward your online degree on passing rigorous assessments (such as tests, projects, assignments, etc.) instead of accumulating credit hours. We call it competency-based learning.
With bachelor's and master's degree programs in education, business, information technology, and health professions, WGU's rigorous yet flexible approach to education gives the university a unique advantage over other online programs. Here's what the WGU Advantage means to you:
- Flexibility and Affordability. Our competency-based approach allows for extensive personalization of your degree program. In most cases, you'll access course material or study independently at the time and place you choose. If you come into your program with years of experience, you may be able to complete your assessments faster. This could save you thousands because you pay tuition at a flat rate every six months, regardless of how many assessments you successfully complete.
- Credibility through Accreditation. WGU is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and nationally accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). WGU's Teachers College is also the first and only exclusively online teacher education institution to receive accreditation from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
- Commitment and Support. As a student at WGU, you'll have the support of a dedicated mentor to keep you motivated as you progress toward your degree. You will work with your mentor until your graduate. You get to know your mentor as an advisor, coach, cheerleader, even a friend. You'll also interact with an online learning community of students in your same program, so you're never alone.
If you're an organized, independent learner willing to devote at least 15 to 20 hours per week to your studies but require flexibility in time and place to complete your education, WGU could be the university you've been looking for. Learn more today!
Here's What The WGU Advantage Means To You:
- Accelerated learning that means lower costs for your education. You pay one flat rate per six-month term, regardless of how many competency units you attempt. If you're able to pass the assessments at a faster pace, you can save a substantial amount of money.
- WGU is the only university ever to have received accreditation from four regional accrediting commissions. This means you can trust the quality and value of a WGU education. WGU's Teachers College is also now NCATE-accredited, the first online university to achieve that distinction.
- Our online learning and assessment model gives you considerable flexibility and control over your education. At WGU, you'll be able to cut through the clutter and focus on what's important to you: gaining the competencies you need to graduate and succeed in your career.
- You'll work with a progress manager, faculty mentors and support staff who are committed to your success and graduation. They'll keep you motivated as they steer you toward your degree.
- Multiple program options in education, business, healthcare and information technology. Whether you're earning a bachelor's or a master's degree, you'll find something that can help you break through to the next level of career success.
Accreditation
Western Governors University is the only university to have received simultaneous accreditation by four regional accrediting commissions. Currently, WGU's "home" accrediting commission is the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (8060 165th Avenue N.E. Suite 100, Redmond, WA 98052; 425-558-4224).
This is the same organization that accredits such leading institutions as the University of Washington, University of Oregon, University of Utah, Brigham Young University, and other public and private colleges. WGU is also nationally accredited by the DETC, Distance Education and Training Council (1601 18th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20009; 202-234-5100).
About the WGU Teachers College
The WGU Teachers College was created with the assistance of a $10 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education, to develop online, competency-based degrees and teacher certification programs for K-12 educators and aspiring teachers. The WGU Teachers College is the first and only online provider of teacher education to receive accreditation from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
The programs were developed using more than 30,000 state and national teacher standards and requirements, including 25 states' teacher performance standards, plus those from NCATE, INTASC, NBPTS, NCTM, the National Reading Panel, and many others. The teaching certificates and endorsements are recognized by multiple states.
