Distance Learning at FIU
Florida International University is a vibrant, student-centered public research university that's WORLDS AHEAD. When you choose FIU for your online education, you become part of a strong and long-standing tradition of academic achievement.
When FIU first opened for classes in 1972, we had 5,667 students — the largest opening day enrollment in U.S. collegiate history. Our growth continues in many areas. FIU has become one of the 25 largest universities in the nation, based on enrollment. We now have more than 54,000 students, over 76,000 online instances of enrollment, 1,000+ full time faculty, and 134,000 alumni. With a total of more than 2,800 full-time employees, FIU is one of the largest employers in Miami-Dade County. We also confer about one half of all degrees awarded by universities in Miami-Dade County.
Approximately 77% of students at FIU are undergraduates with the majority enrolled in the Colleges of Business Administration, Arts & Sciences and Engineering.
96% of the university's full-time faculty hold doctorates or the highest degree attainable in their field. (This statistic reflects tenured or tenure-seeking faculty.)
