Course Title:
Online IEEE Accredited Course - Introduction to Power Systems
School:
Power Management Concepts
Description:
Most mission critical facilities use redundancy with alternate methods of power to achieve a level of reliability necessary for continuous operations. The core of most facility systems is uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), Standby Generator and Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) technologies. They integrate to form an automatic transition between available power sources. UPS provides uninterrupted conditioned power while standby generators meet long-term power demands when normal power is unavailable. ATS technology occurs when loads are transferred between alternate power sources. Critical operations should remain online through the entire process and many potential points of failure could hinder the availability of emergency power. The infrequency of use and critical nature of emergency power dictates the necessity of regularly exercising Standby Power and maintaining all UPS's, ATS's, generators. Fuel Cell technology is beginning to be introduced as an alternate source of clean power.
