| Description: |
(From Community Health Nursing, Hitchcock) The American health care system is in the midst of unparalleled change. The paradigm, or model, under which the U.S. health care system operates changed dramatically after 1983, when the federal government introduced diagnosis-related groups as a means of controlling health care costs. While economics is playing a significant role in the paradigm shift, many other factors, such as consumer demand for the most up-to-date therapies, an aging population, and living longer with chronic illness, must be understood in order to put these changes in context. Change begins with understanding. The goal of this course is to provide you with an understanding of the U.S. health care system with the goal of influencing it in ways that clearly demonstrate nursings commitment to protecting the publics health. This course provides an overview of general and health care economics and their influencing factors. |
