This course provides an overview of the evolution of the spa industry from ancient civilizations to new frontiers of convergence integrating spas, medicine, healthcare and hospitality. Beginning with influences of spa traditions from ancient India, China, Japan, Europe and the Middle East, the industry is tracked through present day business and marketing models with an overview of services, treatments, products and equipment. Discussion on spa treatments will include topics on massage, skin care, dermatology, cosmetic surgery, nutrition, chiropractic, ayurvedic, Chinese medicine, hydrotherapies, aromatherapy, reflexology, herbology and homeopathy. Other topics include: definition and market segmentation of spa categories including day, resort, medical, destination, hospital, lifestyle management programs and wellness centers. |
