This course is a core requirement for the Master Herbalist Diploma, beginning your study of herbal materia medica. This course studies the major active constituents and therapeutic actions of the herbs studied: Alterative, demulcent, cathartic, anthelmintic, astringent, and diuretic herbs. Your course materials include access to the interactive, instructor-led, online classroom. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to use and understand the language of herbal therapeutic actions from alteratives to vulneraries; use forty medicinal plants with confidence, including chamomile, dandelion, echinacea, evening primrose, garlic, ginger, gingko, red clover, and st john's wort; relate types of herbs to the system they most affect; identify key components of protocols for a healthy lifestyle, including potential problem areas; identify and use herbal and nutritional support for good health; know when not to use home remedies; create herbal blends and products, from ointments to fomentations; discuss the history of herbal medicine; and describe why herbal medicine works, with reference to the active constituents of herbs.

| Requirements: |
Admissions requirements include a HSD or GED, commitment to recommended study time and recommendation for admission at the completion of the admissions interview. Basics of Herbalism (Herb 101) or equivalent is a prerequisite. |
Credits: |
3 credits. Graduates will be awarded the Certificate in Herbal Materia Medica. Awards elective credit to the Diploma in Holistic Health Practice program. |
