Phonics is the current “buzz word” for enhancing student reading abilities at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. This course will focus on phonics as a component of the reading curriculum. The course will have the following focal points: the theory and research that describes the role of phonics in developing readers; phonics components, phonics and the literacy curriculum, types of instructional programs, issues related to phonics instruction. As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to describe the importance of phonics from a research-based perspective, identify what elements of the curriculum are actually phonics skills, analyze whether phonics is being appropriately implemented in a curriculum describe the different types of instructional perspectives, and discuss issues regarding phonics instruction.
