This course will cover the role of communication in technology, culture, and society. The course moves historically, exploring the cultural impact of technology in the mid-1800s (telegraph), the early 1900s (film, telephone), World War II (commercial radio, television), and the 1960s (transnational information technologies, computer, VCR, walkman). The second half of the course focuses on the current implications of the Internet for democracy, privacy, community, art, entertainment and other concepts central to US society and culture.
