What criteria were important to you when selecting an online school?
Meet Dave C.
Name: Dave Coffman
Age: 45
Marital Status: Married
Children: Two teenagers
Current Location: Utah
Personal Quote: "If you've been out of school for awhile, getting your feet wet in a community college can help you get re-acclimated to the classroom."
School: American Military University
Target: Master of Arts in Military Studies
The greatest priority was finding a degree program of interest to me, followed by a class schedule that was conducive to my work schedule, and, of course, cost. I considered three schools in total and ended up going with American Military University because of their unique degree offerings, as well as the fact that it was 100% online, and low cost.
Tell us a little bit about your online classes.
AMU uses Blackboard, a course management software program, to deliver its online courses, supplemented with traditional textbooks. I order all my books online, usually from either MBS Direct or Amazon.com. My current course load this semester is three units. There are typically between eight and twelve other people in my classes.
In your opinion, what is the most difficult aspect about distance learning?
The connotation that a distance learning degree does not have the same value as a traditional college program. However, I believe this bias is changing as I see more traditional colleges offering online education programs.
What aspects do you like the best?
Self-learning, which allows the student to identify what aspect of the course is relevant to their professional life. Plus, there's no hassles with commuting and finding parking or obtaining books.
How much did your degree cost?
$14,000.00. Because I paid out-of-pocket as I went, I did not have to rely on any student loans. Additionally, my employer provides a 10% incentive for a bachelor's degree.
Any last words of wisdom for people considering online education?
If possible, complete your lower division courses at a community college. It's a great way to save money, because tuition is usually much cheaper at a two-year school. Also, if you've been out of school for awhile, getting your feet wet in a community college can help you get re-acclimated to the classroom.
