Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with No Minor or Concentration

Criminal justice occupations are employing more people than ever before. In response to 9/11, federal, local and state law enforcement agencies have hired additional security and investigative personnel to protect places of interest and watch for suspicious activities. New technologies such as mobile radiation detectors have also caused an increase in hiring, as trained staff are required for installation and monitoring. A degree in criminal justice provides students with a solid understanding of the law, ethical decision-making, and criminal science. This knowledge translates to a variety of careers in the field of public safety, from law enforcement officer to private investigator.

Criminal Justice — Is it for you?

Criminal justice professionals often work with and around people. Those interested in this career field should have a strong sense of responsibility and the ability to take control of a tense situation. Some positions require a degree of danger and participation in threatening activities. This career field can also be emotionally difficult at times, as law enforcement personnel may witness death or injury due to accidents or criminal acts. Integrity, honesty, reasoning skills, and sound judgment are important attributes of professionals in any criminal justice-related career. Criminal justice degrees often lead to a career that commands respect and appreciation from the general public, so those considering this field should feel comfortable serving as a role model for the community, both while at work and on personal time. Most occupations have a clearly defined reporting hierarchy, so respect for authority and superiors is also important.
