What are ESL Programs?

As globalization has hit everything from industry to politics and communication, English has internationally become the language of choice. Since English is so useful and the most commonly-learned second language around the world, ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers are in high demand.

ESL, which is also referred to as... ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and EFL (English as a Foreign Language), teaches students how to understand and produce verbal and written English. Some ESL instructors work in K-12 schools, teaching largely first-generation American students and others teach adults, often in a night school setting. Usually, many different native languages are represented in a single-classroom.

ESL programs can provide the opportunity to travel to far-ranging locales and become immersed in different cultures. ESL teacher are not required to master foreign languages, just to know the difficulties of English pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Another important part of the job is to know the cultural etiquette of other countries.

States have different requirements to become an ESL teacher in public elementary or secondary schools, but most require teaching certification with an ESL extension. While an ESL degree or certificate isn't always required to become a tutor or even a teacher overseas, ESL programs provide opportunities in areas across the globe.
