The potential winner may be required to show proof of being the authorized account holder. There is a limit of one entry per person and per e-mail address. APPLICANTS WHO SUBMIT MULTIPLE ENTRIES WILL BE DISQUALIFIED. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED BY 5:00 PM (ET) ON THE LAST DAY OF THE ENTRY PERIOD. Entry must be made by the Applicant only at the Entry Site. Entries made by any other individual or any entity and/or originating at any other Internet website or e-mail address will be void. The use of any device, hardware and/or computer software to automate the entry process is prohibited.
  3. ESSAY GUIDELINES: All submitted essays must be in English and no longer than 1500 words in total. If the essay is longer than 1500 words, only the first 1500 words will be judged. Essays must comply with the following guidelines: (a) the essay (including the copyright in the essay) must be owned by the Applicant; (b) the essay must not previously have been distributed publicly or won any award; (c) the essay must not contain any material that would violate or infringe upon the rights of any third party, including without limitation copyrights, trademarks or rights of privacy or publicity, or that is defamatory, threatening, indecent, obscene or offensive, or that is unlawful, in violation of or contrary to any applicable laws or regulations, or which requires a license from any third party; (d) the essay must not contain any material that Sponsor, in its sole discretion, deems inappropriate for public viewing, and (e) the essay must be original and have been created solely by the Applicant. In the event of an actual or apparent violation of these guidelines, Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to take such action as it deems appropriate with respect to the essay in question, if any, including without limitation amending and/or altering the essay to make the essay compliant or disqualifying and/or not posting the essay on the Website.
  4. WINNER SELECTION: Based upon the information provided by each Applicant at the Entry Site concerning the Applicant’s educational background, desired field of study and other information provided by the Applicant, Sponsor will determine in its discretion which Educator is an appropriate educational institution to potentially grant a scholarship to the Applicant. Up to a total of 92 winners will be selected by panels of judges designated by Sponsor (the “Judges”), on or about October 27, 2010. One panel of Judges will be established for each Educator, and each Educator will select one or more winners from among the Applicants deemed appropriate by Sponsor for that Educator. The Judges will score each Applicant’s essay based on the following criteria, weighted equally: relevance to the topic; originality; and overall impression. In the event of a tie, the tied Applicant with the higher “overall impression” score, as determined by the Judges, will be selected as the winner. The Judges’ decisions are final and binding in all respects.
  5. WINNER VERIFICATION AND NOTIFICATION: Potential winners are subject to verification. The potential winners will be notified by phone and/overnight mail or delivery service, in Sponsor’s discretion, on or about October 25, 2010. If a potential winner is unreachable by phone during a period of forty-eight (48) consecutive hours, or if a notification is returned as undeliverable, the potential winner may be disqualified. Each potential winner (or parent/legal guardian if the potential winner is a minor in her/his state of residence) will be required to complete and return an Affidavit of Eligibility and Release within ten (10) days of attempted delivery of same. Each potential winner will also be required to complete and return IRS Form W-9 (Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification) within this same time period. Failure to sign and return all required documents within the specified time period will result in forfeiture and disqualification of the potential winner and an alternate winner will be selected.
  6. SCHOLARSHIPS: Up to 92 scholarships will be awarded. Scholarships are to be used toward tuition for the pursuit of an online undergraduate or graduate degree/program at an Educator selected by Sponsor in its discretion. Receipt and use of the scholarship is subject to all policies, restrictions and conditions imposed by the applicable Educator, including the Educator’s admission requirements. ALL FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL TAXES, AND ANY OTHER COSTS AND EXPENSES, ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECEIPT OR USE OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS ARE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF EACH WINNER. The scholarship are awarded WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, express or implied, without limitation. If a Winner chooses not to accept his/her prize, an alternate winner may be chosen. The approximate retail value of each prize will vary depending on the Educator and specific degree/program, but is expected to be not less than $688 and not more than $50,000. Any taxes on the prize value are the sole responsibility of the winner. An IRS form 1099 will be issued if required by law. Scholarships consist only of items expressly specified in these rules. Any costs or expenses associated with the acceptance or use of any scholarship (including, without limitation, books and transportation expenses) are the responsibility of the winner. No substitution or transfer of the scholarship or the right to receive the scholarship is permitted, except that Sponsor may in its discretion substitute for any scholarship an alternate scholarship of equal or greater value.
    1. Allied Schools: Winners have up to 1 year to complete each course in their Scholarship Package. Winners will receive 1 course at a time and must complete the course in order to receive the next one.
    2. Walden University: Scholarship Student must be enrolled in a degree program and begin the first course not later than 6 months from the scholarship award date. The award will be distributed to cover tuition and residency fee only.  All recipients who enroll in a Walden program are responsible for the technology fee each term. Recipients are also responsible for all other non-tuition costs including but not limited to, residency travel and other university or program fees as applicable. The cost of books and course materials are included in the tuition for many of Walden’s programs and specializations. However, for those programs that do not include the cost of books and materials, the scholarship student will be responsible for paying those costs. Scholarship Student must meet Walden’s admission requirements and the university must be in receipt of all of the applicant’s official admissions documentation for scholarship funds to be applied to the student’s account. Students who withdraw from the university will forfeit the scholarship. Students who take a leave of absence and re-enter the same program will retain the scholarship award. Students who take a leave of absence and choose to enter a different program will forfeit the scholarship award. In order for scholarship funding to continue throughout the length of the program, recipients must meet the satisfactory academic progress criteria set forth by Walden University’s current catalog for the duration of their program. For existing Walden students, scholarship funds will be applied starting from the award date.  Scholarship funds do not cover any expenses or fees incurred prior to the award date. This scholarship is not managed by Walden University’s Office of Financial Aid. Please call an enrollment advisor at 1-866-492-5336 for more information.

    Mabel,

Thank you for your comment. I apologize for your frustration. Please understand that it's nothing personal. The fact is that there are legal, as well as tax-related, implications beyond our control that prevent us from being able to allow the participation of non-U.S. residents. Sorry again and good luck to you.

Sorry another important question so that I may submit my application, asap. I read some of the previous winning recipients and thier essays reach well over 1500 words. I was just wondering why are we limited. That is a short amount to list so many powerful statements, while trying to tell something about yourself. Just wanted to get a better understanding as I read the 2008 and 2009 past winners. Thanks again.

I am a mother of a 4 year old and a stepmom fighting for custody of my two step sons ages 7 and 13. Over the last two years our family has been in financial troubles. I use to make over 80,000 a year in the mortgage industry for a Wallstreet company to being laid off with no mortgage positions even paying 30,000 a year. I sell marykay but that is not a necessity for people to buy in the economy that we are in. I am currently volunteering for an attorney's office to learn to be a paralegal. If I could afford to get the education, they would hire me a lot sooner if things work out. I need to find a new career and this is something that is of interest to me. I went to Cittone Institute right after high school and paid for it while working two jobs. Please help!

I was wondering if this includes moms with children who are over 18, taking care of grandson living with me? When my children were little, I had to care for my husband who I finally had to take off life support. At the time I had been attending college and had to quit. After his death, I obviously had to work full time to support my children. While attending college, I made the President's List 2 times, Dean's List 4 times, so as you can see I am intelligent and work hard towards grades, employment, children. I'd like to try for this scholarship so I can afford to go back to school, show my children dreams are attainable, you just have to work towards them and not lose focus. So...since they are all adults now, except my 4 year old grandson, am I even eligible? If I am not, do you know of any scholarships that do help people like me? Thank you.

Because it did not show any personal information on the page the link brought me to, I added my name and email address to the essay submission box. Since my essay was exactly 1500 words (according to Microsoft Word), the addition of my contact information put me over. When I clicked submit, it received a response with my name, revealing that the essay link and my application were connected and my contact info additon was unnecessary. Well, I went ahead and did my FAFSA and am going to go ahead and apply to Walden University so I can have them matriculate my courses into their system and see what I need to do to go from my ASB to a bachelors degree. I'm hoping to win so I can actually afford to enroll, and my grandmother always taught me that good things come to those who work for them, not those who wait... if it's worth doing, it's worth making the effort. Maybe my extra efforts will pay off and I'll be one of the fortunate ones chosen. If I am, it won't cause me to lose my scholarship if I've already applied and been matriculated, will it? I really interested in applying for the on-line education program. To me this is a dream come true. But before I even apply, I want to ask and make sure that I will not be asked to travel to any other state to finish the course. Will I be asked that? Also, will I have to attend a community collage at one point during the online course to help complete the course or is it a strictly on-line course?

It is time for me to step up and help with our family finances for my husband and our two beautiful daughters so we can have the American dream that everyone talks about.

p.s. - I am a leagal imigrant from Brazil if anyone is worried that I am an illegal Mexican or anything like that: my husband pays lots of money for my parole (term used for legal imigrants)that the illegal ones seem to escape... my poor husband pays and tells me that I am worth it all. I am a mother of three and a grandmother of six grandchildren. I have never had the opportunity to attend college because of the money it costs to go. I am still working full time and my husband is on Disability. He is also very proud to have served our country as a Paratrooper in the Army.

I still feel I have a lot to give, and to get a Degree would make my children so very proud of me, to continue my education. None of my sisters or brother got a chance to go to college either, and I would be setting a great example for my grandchildren. I am very proud to say that all three of my children have had some college, or trade school training. My oldest daughter has a Masters Degree -- the first one ever in our family.

My Father found himself single parent to raise four children after my Mother passed away. We ranged in age from 11 months old to 15 years old when she died. He had to work two jobs sometimes, but was the best father ever, but he passed away in 1983. He only had a high school education, but was very proud of that, because he was the first one in the family to receive a high school deploma. He proudly served our country as a cook in the Army during World War Two and the Koren war. He passed away when he was 70 years old, but at that point in time, he had out lived anyone in his family by 20 years.

I feel so strongly about my family and grandchildren always staying as a close family unit, because both of my fathers parents had died before I was born, along with his father-in-law. My mother's mother passed away two months after my mother did. My father had no one to help him but, I feel so lucky that I had him as my father, and I taught my family all the morals and values that he passed down to me.

I would be thrilled to be considered for a Scholarship, Thank You for your time.

@Julie Saperstein: I don't believe any of the sponsor schools offer online MSW programs, unfortunately. As for requirements with regards to state licensing, you'd have to check with the state of NJ directly to ensure a school would be considered acceptable. Sorry!

To win a full scholarship, would mean that I could work in my field of expertise with no worries. My field of expertise is working with the Mentally Challenged population. To do this with no worries, in my opinion, will assist me with my ability to make a social change. Why? Because, by not worrying so much about finances, while I am working with individuals, will mean that I will be dedicating my time and energy on what really matters. And what really matters is the client at that given moment and their issues with society. Plus, I will get a chance to spend more time with my boys and my mentally challenged sister. I will be minding their well-being because I will have only one job.

I am currently a single mother of 3 young daughters and a widow,my husband died when I was jut a few weeks pregnant with my youngest daughter who will be 2 in August. She was born blind and disabled, she has a disease called agenesis of the corpus callosum, which means that she is missing the part of her brain that connects the right side to the left side. Before her first birthday, she underwent 2 surgeries at cheldrens hospital in Boston and her eyesight was partially restored. She is currently able to crawl, she sits up, she eats all the same food tat her sisters do and she is making amazing progress, she does, however, undergo 3 treatments per week from Perkins School for the Blind, physical therapy and occupational therapy. This summer she will be undergoing one more surgery to try ande strengthen the muscles in her right eye. But this is why I am currently unable to work, because every free minute that I have is spent taking care of the baby and her two sisters, who are 3 and 7 years old. n I love my girls and wouldn't trade them for the world but it is very overwhelming at times and I am exhausted all of the time, but I want a better life for my daughters and I know the only way I can do this is by returning to school. Also, through returning to school I will be setting a positive example for my daughters and teaching them a life long lesson. I would be eternally grateful to be gthe recipient of this scholarship.

I did actually finish high school and have actually been in contact with my High School since late 2002 trying to get my transcripts or just some kind of legal documentatin regarding my attendance and diploma and have been told that my records have been lost. A counselor at the school still remembered me when I called and told me he would help me get what I needed and I never heard back. I contacted the superintendent to no avail. This would be such an opportunity to show my kids that even if odds are against you that you never give up even when you feel that life has beaten you down. I reaaly want this opportunity. My question is that I applied to another school that is not elligible 3 days ago and even applied toFAFSA. They said that I could qualify for up to $5000 which is definitly not enough. If I tell the schhool the school that I am going to do this program and try for a full scholarship will I burn bridges with them and the financial aid people and how do I cancel with them. I have not started school yet so I don't think I am tied to the school because I was told that I have 3 days to withdraw. The admissions lady is calling me on Monday. I am planning on telling her about this opportunity, but I am afraid that she will say I can't or that i am not allowed. If I go back into the FAFSA website can I update my colledge choice with Virginia's schooland if so I need to know Virginia's school code? Can you give me that number at my e-mail?

    I Will Persevere!

My name is Natalie Kay Lovoi. I have been living and supporting three children since I was seventeen on my own. During this time I have been through the most extreme circumstances to overcome. Some of my circumstances included; foster care, teen mother, domestic violence survivor, divorce and fulltime working single mother and student. In this brief essay I hope to touch your heart and change the lives of anyone God brings into my life through my career.

When I was 13 years old the Junior High School I was attending removed me from my home and placed me in foster care for abused children. After a brief stay in foster care they placed me back with my parents and had no counseling or treatment. Terrified, I returned home. My father blamed me and moved to another city leaving me with no place to go. I kept attending school and church and living with friends.

In high school I began to work two jobs and lived with my boyfriend. It didn’t take long and I was 17 and pregnant. I was kick out of high school by the principal who stated, “Being pregnant is a disease and would spread in the school so, and I was expelled.” I found an alternative school for pregnant women and remained in church support groups and worked two jobs. My boyfriend began to resent me becoming pregnant and began to abuse me. He beat me in the hospital and left me in the waiting room for being in false labor and not knowing the difference. Nine months pregnant I slept on the waiting room floor. The real reason was I had taken him from a party and his drugs he was currently using. I gave birth to a healthy son August 11th 1989. I have never done drugs to date.

After my son was born I had to drop out of high school because the abuse became so bad. I moved out and put myself through Certified Medical Assistant program. I graduated in 1991. Meet my first husband and married in 1992. I had not received counseling at that time and fell back in the same abusive relationship, just married a different man. I lived in and out of abused women shelters and remained in the cycle of abuse for twelve years. It wasn’t until he gave my son a suicide note to give me the morning he had attempted suicide that I began to seek help. He was in coma for a week in ICU and no health insurance. During these twelve years I worked full time and attended college to get my GED and attend college with three small children. I found the strength through counseling to move out. I had little income. My husband would not seek help and he divorced me in 2003. In the divorce I could not afford an attorney and he won the house and left me with the children and all of the debt. I have raised three children and loved patients while working full time while my wages have been garnished the entire time.

I have been laid off from a job that I worked as a teacher for WSU Family Residents for the last three years. My life teaches compassion and relates to how the stress of life can affect physical health. I teach how to overcome but completing one thing at a time and forgiveness. I have one wish. I have one semester to complete my requirements to transfer to Washington State University to achieve my BSN. I will persevere!

Not sure what to mark re: certificate or AA. I wanted to do Medical Diagnostic Sonography. Some tell me it is a certificate or I could do xray technology & expand from there. Is this listed & I'm missing it?? I have spoken to an Ashford counselor & know something close to this is what they offer.

@Amanda: If you're already a student at Capella, you're not eligible to apply :( I'm sorry!

@Betty: I'm so sorry, but this is intended for working moms and dads.

@Melody: You'll have to go through the application process to see what programs are available for scholarships. If you didn't see it, it's not offered, unfortunately.

I would like to congratulate the lucky winners and pray for their successful completion of their studies. They should pull up their socks without any fear or shame. Education has no age limit and it is a continuous process. God bless everybody in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ I pray Amen.

I recently married and have two more children to raise. Thank you to those who are sponsoring these scholarships.

I am currently working on my Masters of Science in Psychology. I plan to be complete by March or 2011. So my question is will it be possible for me to hold to scholarship over until I am complete with my Master and use it for my PH.D or PSY.D. In addition, there are many things, which I would like to do with my degree, if I am required to switch for an example from clinical psychology to forensic psychology will the scholarship still apply as long as the applicant attends a approved school?

I decided to return to school after receiving a terrible diagnosis. I worked in Surgery as a Tech and was diagnosed with Stage IV-b Lymphoma. I was told that because of the Chemo, Radiation, and Bone Marrow Transplant that I would no longer be able to work in surgery. Since the diagnosis I have been on disability. It offered me the time to return back to school. I am near my goal but am unable to finish because of finances. My hope is to finish college before my 15 year old son starts. I want him to see what education can provide and it is my hope that I will be able to work to support my son while he goes through College. I plan to teach University classes when I finish and I hope that I can get the opportunity to realize my dream.
