Why Do Schools Offer Free Laptop Programs?

There are many students around the country who would love the opportunity to pursue an online degree, but can’t because they can’t afford the technology needed to complete coursework. As a result, there are a number of on-campus and online colleges that offer laptops in order to better meet the needs of their students.

This may help some students achieve their goal of earning a college degree by providing one of the essential tools they need to perform coursework and to further their education.

Without the obstacle of not being able to afford a laptop, students don’t have to worry about another large, upfront expense. Instead, they can focus on finding schools that offer their desired major.

Is the Laptop Completely Free?

That depends on the way each program is structured. Some online colleges that offer laptops may add an additional fee to your tuition, but it may not be drastically higher than a technology fee at schools that don’t offer a free laptop. Plus, by including the fee into your tuition, your financial aid may cover it. This may help you save some out-of-pocket expenses while you’re pursuing your degree.

Other schools only allow you to borrow or loan the laptop while you’re in school and then require you to return it upon earning your degree or leaving the program.

Other programs offer steep discounts on laptops and other technology through partner programs with technology companies, such as Dell or Apple. Besides laptops, this can also include smartphones, headphones, tablets, and even data plans for your new gear.

Other Aspects to Consider with a Free Laptop Program

A laptop is a great gift to any student. However, a laptop by itself may not be enough to help a student succeed. As a result, some schools offer additional technology to complete the package that may help you earn your degree.

Some of these may include those listed below.

Free External Hard Drive

While the free laptop may be helpful, if you don’t backup your notes and assignments, an accident could ruin your whole semester. As a result, some schools offer an external hard drive with their laptop program. This allows students to backup all of the important information like notes, papers, research, and of course, photos. That way, if you accidentally spill your morning cup of coffee on your laptop, all your files are still accessible.

Free Microsoft Office Suite

This may be one of the most important tools for any college student. More than likely, you will use each of the programs in Microsoft Office (such as Word or Excel) while earning your degree, though that may depend on your specific major.

However, many schools that offer a free laptop also load a number of software options that are important to enhancing your studies. This typically includes Microsoft Office and others, but not all schools have this offer.

Free Warranty Coverage

Whether you chose a school that offers a brand new laptop or a refurbished one, almost all online colleges that offer laptops also offer a warranty program through the developer. This may ease your stress as you’re walking around campus with this expensive piece of machinery.

Always be sure to check the specific aspects of your warranty, as not all types of damage may be covered. Also, it’s important to note that all schools may not always offer you a warranty plan, so be sure to check with a number of different schools to compare your options before applying.

Free Tech Support

Many online colleges offer students free tech support as a way to make sure that every student can access the tools and coursework they need. In addition, those schools that offer a free laptop may also offer free tech support in case anything goes wrong.

Often, this support is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, though some schools may only have it available during normal business hours. However, many provide a number of different ways for you to reach them, such as phone, email, chat, or FAQs pages.

Other Free Perks

Some online colleges that offer laptops may even add additional accessories or resources to their technology package. This may include a bag or carrying case, headphones, repair and replacement services, and even free Wi-Fi while on campus.

Keep in mind that every school has a unique design, especially when it comes to offering a free laptop. Therefore some schools may not offer any additional items while others may include all of those listed above. Be sure to check with all of your favorite schools before applying in order to find the perfect program for you.
