Southeastern Institute, or SEI, is dedicated to providing entry level career-focused education to students throughout North and South Carolina. Previously known as the Southeastern School of Neuromuscular Massage, they began operating under their current name and offering programs outside of massage therapy in 2009.
SEI supports their students’ education in a few different ways. They prioritize practical experience in selecting faculty, meaning teachers have experience as well as educational expertise. Students may also pursue hands-on experience in and out of the classroom, and take advantage of career guidance services. Specific experiences may vary based on the student’s program and campus of choice.
Programs offered at Southeastern Institute
Currently, SEI offers several programs in healthcare and healthcare-related fields. Each of these is professionally-oriented, meaning they’re designed to support the skills one might need in entry level employment in that focus area. Programs currently offered (as of January 2018) are described below.
Professional Clinical Massage Therapy
The Southeastern Institute Professional Clinical Massage Therapy Program is designed to prepare students prepare for potential therapeutic massage roles in medical facilities. These may include hospitals, doctor’s offices, and rehab and outpatient facilities, among others.
Programs cover basic massage therapy, neuromuscular clinical massage theories and techniques, massage law, and more. Successful students may choose to sit for relevant licensure exams, provided they have satisfied all educational and practical prerequisites. These requirements may vary by credential and state, and are subject to change.
Electronic Medical Billing and Coding Specialist
The Electronic Medical Coding and Billing Specialist program at SEI trains students to for roles in health information management in professional contexts. Topics covered include health records management, business communication, billing software, health insurance issues and procedures, medical terminology, office administration, and, of course, medical coding. Students who successfully complete this program earn a certificate. Additional steps may be required for certification or licensure.
Prerequisites to apply to the Medical Billing and Coding program include a high school diploma and a passing an entrance exam. Students might be required to complete externship requirements in addition to satisfying coursework. Reach out to the school for more information.
Medical Assisting Certificate
The SEI Medical Assisting Certificate program is designed help students prepare for potential roles assisting physicians in a medical practice. This involves honing a diverse skill set, including lab testing (such as blood chemistry and urinalysis), EKGs, vital signs, and office administration, among others. This program, like the others at SEI, is focused on entry-level responsibilities.
This certificate program may be completed in eight to fourteen months, depending on the student’s preferred course load per semester. In addition to classroom and lab work, students may be required to complete externships for field experience.
Southeastern Medical Institute offers a Pharmacy Technology certificate program, which helps students hone the pharmacy knowledge, technical skills and professionalism they may need in entry level pharmacy technologist roles. Courses may discuss pharmacy technology in contexts like drug stores, nursing care facilities, hospitals and outpatient care centers, pharmacy manufacturing, and other organizations.
