The New School: A University
The New School traces its academic history to its founding in 1919 as The New School for Social Research. Its main campus is located in the dynamic neighborhood of Greenwich Village in New York City. The New School is legendary progressive university comprising eight schools bound by a common goal: to prepare and inspire its more than 9,000 undergraduate and graduate students to bring about positive change in the world.
During the decades of rapid far-reaching change since it founding, The New School has remained at the center of social activism, artistic experimentation, intellectual freedom, and educational innovation.
Online Education at The New School
Your mind has no borders—why should your university?

The university began offering online courses and programs in 1994 with the support of grants from FIPSE, AT&T, Citibank, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The New School and its degree programs are fully accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Its credits and degrees are recognized and accepted by other accredited colleges, universities, and professional schools throughout the United States. The New School, a privately supported institution, is chartered as a university by the Regents of the State of New York.
The New School's online program allows serious students like you to learn in a way that fits your unique lifestyle. Whether you are earning credit toward a New School degree or are ready to explore something new, at home or abroad, The New School brings higher education to you.
The Online Classroom Experience
Online classes meet asynchronously—which means you can read materials, join discussions, and post responses anytime of the day or night. You don't have to be online at the same time as your classmates, but because you can read all of their responses every time you are "in class," you'll feel as if everyone were together.
Students studying for credit must complete papers, tests, and projects, just as they would in a traditional classroom. It is strongly recommended that students log in to the class at least three times a week.
Technical Support and Services
An online student orientation is available to all students new to online learning. In addition to a technical orientation and information on resources available to students, the orientation gives you the opportunity to learn how to navigate the online classroom, gain familiarity with online communication, and get a sense of the dynamics of online interaction before a course begins. The orientation remains available for reference throughout the semester.
Technical support and student service professionals are available by telephone or e-mail twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
