Online Degree Programs From Western Governors University

Online degrees based on your skills and knowledge.

Western Governors University provides a revolutionary way to get the respected and accredited education you want. The concept is a radically simple approach to higher education. Progress toward your online degree is based on passing rigorous assessments (such as tests, projects, and assignments) that measure your skills and knowledge in your field of study. We call it competency-based learning.

WGU emphasizes mastery of essential skills and knowledge, not accumulating credits. Unlike traditional colleges, we truly value the experience and knowledge you bring to the table. This makes WGU a great choice for students who are already working in the field.

WGU’s approach to earning a degree rewards focused hard-working professionals. If you’re an organized, independent learner willing to devote at least 15-20 hours a week to your studies but require flexibility in time and place to complete your education, then WGU could be what you’re looking for.

While your WGU program definitely won’t be “easy,” you can advance toward your degree as fast as you can learn and demonstrate your competence through WGU’s assessments. This helps keep your costs down. If you’re able to advance more quickly, you can save both time and money.

Challenging and efficient. These are the hallmarks of WGU’s competency-based approach.

Here’s What The WGU Advantage Means To You:

  • Accelerated learning that means lower costs for your education. You pay one flat rate per six-month term, regardless of how many competency units you attempt. If you’re able to pass the assessments at a faster pace, you can save a substantial amount of money.
  • WGU is the only university ever to have received accreditation from four regional accrediting commissions. This means you can trust the quality and value of a WGU education. WGU’s Teachers College is also now NCATE-accredited, the first online university to achieve that distinction.
  • Our online learning and assessment model gives you considerable flexibility and control over your education. At WGU, you’ll be able to cut through the clutter and focus on what’s important to you: gaining the competencies you need to graduate and succeed in your career.
  • You’ll work with a progress manager, faculty mentors and support staff who are committed to your success and graduation. They’ll keep you motivated as they steer you toward your degree.
  • Multiple program options in education, business, healthcare and information technology. Whether you’re earning a bachelor’s or a master’s degree, you’ll find something that can help you break through to the next level of career success.

Accreditation

Western Governors University is the only university to have received simultaneous accreditation by four regional accrediting commissions. Currently, WGU's "home" accrediting commission is the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (8060 165th Avenue N.E. Suite 100, Redmond, WA 98052; 425-558-4224).

This is the same organization that accredits such leading institutions as the University of Washington, University of Oregon, University of Utah, Brigham Young University, and other public and private colleges. WGU is also nationally accredited by the DETC, Distance Education and Training Council (1601 18th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20009; 202-234-5100).

About the WGU Teachers College

The WGU Teachers College was created with the assistance of a $10 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education, to develop online, competency-based degrees and teacher certification programs for K-12 educators and aspiring teachers. The WGU Teachers College is the first and only online provider of teacher education to receive accreditation from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

The programs were developed using more than 30,000 state and national teacher standards and requirements, including 25 states' teacher performance standards, plus those from NCATE, INTASC, NBPTS, NCTM, the National Reading Panel, and many others. The teaching certificates and endorsements are recognized by multiple states.
