This course is an introduction to the African continent, this course is intended to fulfill two primary purposes: to acquaint the student with the African environment--its peoples, their culture, and its past and contemporary society--and to develop an appreciation for African civilization--one that has made a major contribution to American society. This introduction will be achieved through an examination of geopolitical context, historical themes, and selected social, political, economic, religious, and aesthetic characteristics of both traditional and modern Africa. Meets UNC-Chapel Hill General Education requirements. |
