| Course Title: |
Photography and the Fine Arts - Undergraduate - Spring |
| School: |
Syracuse University
|
| Description: |
This course is a survey of the history of photography from roughly 1840 to 1980. The online lectures and discussions encompass more than the formal study of photographic history. We will be exploring the context in which photographic history was made. Our study will range across other academic disciplines besides photo history to include fine art, literature, political and intellectual history; and the media and popular culture of the times in which these photographers worked. The history of photography is essential to ground a student of the fine arts (and, possibly, a future practitioner or the amateur photographic enthusiast) in the tools and techniques, the aesthetics and vision, of the photographers who have preceded them. One can't truly make an original statement without knowing what has come before. Having this perspective is also of use to those majoring in any of the graphics and the design arts. Increasingly, photography has become an important component in shaping not just the look of things to come but in the marketing of them and the determination of their place in the popular culture. Seeing photography in its historical context will be of value to anyone working in visual communications and the fine arts. |
