eLearners.com Licenses New Tool to Assess Students' Readiness for Online Learning

(Hoboken, N.J.) April 29, 2004 – eLearners.com Inc., creator of the leading website for connecting learners to education, has announced the availability of its popular eLearners AdvisorSM for license by academic institutions. The eLearners Advisor is a tool designed to assist prospective students in determining their readiness for online education. The seven-minute assessment, which eLearners.com® customizes to reflect the look and feel of each academic institution, asks 42 targeted questions that evaluate a user's preparedness for online education, while gathering valuable data on that individual.

In addition to providing prospects with comprehensive feedback and information on their compatibility with online learning, the eLearners Advisor provides the academic institution with ratings on the prospects' inclination toward the online environment.

"Our advertisers tell us that one of the key differences between qualified and non-qualified prospects is their comfort level with getting a degree online," said CJ DeSantis, President of eLearners.com. "The eLearners Advisor is a valuable way for prospects to understand their preparedness. It also gives the academic institution an understanding of the challenges they're prospects are facing, so that the admission counselors can help them as they're in the process of making a decision."

The eLearners Advisor assesses e-learning readiness in four important areas:

  • Technology access (computer & Internet access)
  • Personal factors (motivation & scheduling issues)
  • Technical skills (computer & Internet skills)
  • Learning styles (as they relate to online education)

Since its launch, over 5,000 prospective online students have used the eLearners Advisor, and in optional user feedback, all but 1% found the tool to be a valuable resource. The majority of the users have been well prepared for online degrees, however, the personal factors of motivation and schedule provide challenges for many. Nearly 40 percent of the respondents believe that online education is "the fastest and easiest way to get a degree," perhaps indicating a misunderstanding of the level of work required. Another 47 percent of respondents indicated they had less than 10 hours available per week to devote to their studies.
