Local eStudent wins national messy desk contest
Gainesville woman is named Grand Prize
winner of eLearners.com
Your Home Campus Contest
HOBOKEN, N.J., July 14, 2006 -
Clutter and cramped space are just two of the things
that won online learner Renee Herbert of Gainesville,
the Grand Prize in the Your Home Campus contest.
In a competition that began with more than 200 entries –
some with photos of aging computers littered with sticky
notes, papers spilling out of disorganized file cabinets
and desks stained with coffee mug rings – eLearners.com,
narrowed the field down to three finalists.
“Renee’s entry was the perfect example of what happens
when an entire family uses one computer” said online
learning expert Andy Gansler, CEO of eLearners.com. “It
was the deciding factor in awarding her the Grand
Prize.”
Herbert will receive $1,000 towards the construction of
a Home Campus designed by home design expert Hannah
Keeley, plus a new PC from Hewlett-PackardŽ. Keeley’s
design work has been featured in several national
publications and television segments.
“Sharing a computer space with three kids is a
challenge,” said Herbert. “I have to clean up after them
before I sit down to concentrate on my own studies.”
A recent nationwide survey of more than 1,200 people,
conducted on behalf of eLearners.comŽ, found that among
the biggest problems associated with home computing are
lighting and noise (33 percent), clutter (22 percent),
lack of space (18 percent) and uncomfortable work
stations (11 percent).
“If you can carve out five feet, maybe along a wall or
in a closet, then you can create what we call a ‘home
campus,’” Keeley said. “It just takes a little bit of
space, a touch of style and personality to create this
practical alternative to the traditional home office.”
The two runners up:
-
Jodi Miles, an online student from Fort
Collins, Co. receives a Hewlett-PackardŽ home computer
for her entry detailing the clutter challenges
associated with her family’s learning space.
-
Erin Hatch, an online student from
Toledo, Oh. receives a PDA (personal digital assistant)
for her entry describing how she juggles her course
work, job and challenges of raising a two-year-old son.
