California school district launches online campus

According to the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL), a total of 45 of the 50 states plus Washington, D.C. have state-led online learning initiatives. This trend continues to grow as more schools seek to reach nontraditional learners, such as those who require extra help, and students who desire more academic challenges.
For example, Plumas Unified School District in California recently launched three online academies. Plumas News reports that the web-based program was created out of a need for more course offerings in local middle and high schools. After losing a number of students to online charter schools, the district decided to create its own virtual campus.
Each learner who enrolls in the online program will receive a personal learning plan designed to meet their academic needs. Course offerings include credit recovery, advanced placement, electives and core classes. Student progress will be carefully monitored through a process that was created to help learners who are not meeting expectations.
A growing number of schools are launching these programs, as many virtual campuses show annual growth rates that are between 20 and 45 percent per year, according to the iNACOL.
