Distance education, which uses technology to deliver education to students who are not in a physical classroom, has undergone a revolution in the past few years. In 2009, for instance, there was an overall increase of 1.2 percent in higher education, but the growth rate for online enrollments was an... astonishing 17 percent. Online educational programs are increasing in quality as students increase in quantity, and the need for visionary professionals in this field is growing as well.
Distance education requires the same caliber of experienced instructors and dedicated administrators as traditional, brick-and-mortar education. Distance education has also expanded into the business training sector. However, as a relatively new form of delivering instruction, distance education requires specialized professionals to establish best practices and continue developing the optimal technologies for non-traditional students.
Specializations in distance education include: distance education technology, distance education teaching and training, and distance education policy and management. Master's programs in this field will teach students how to implement distance education programs within existing institutions; develop a business plan and strategic goals for a new distance education program; and manage technology in distance delivery. Coursework will generally include classes in organizational leadership, informational technology, ethics, and social responsibility.
Not surprisingly, a large part of these degree programs are completely online. However, a good Master's program in Distance Education will also encourage collaboration among peers. Group work, which has shown to have as much positive impact in the online learning environment as the traditional one, is especially important among a cohort that will become leaders in the distance learning movement.
