Online Counseling Degrees

With a master degree in counseling, you may choose to become a school guidance counselor, career advisor, family therapist, mental health counselor, addiction therapist, or other specialist that helps others deal with problems. These types of careers may be well suited to you if you feel that you are dedicated to helping others and if you can handle the stress that may come from guiding others through problems or ... illnesses

Before you begin working on your master degree in counseling, you may want to review the professional requirements for counselors practicing in your field of interest. In most cases, you can apply to become a licensed counselor once you have your master degree in counseling. However, some states and specialty areas may have additional requirements. For example, some states require that school guidance counselors have their teaching certification as well.

After completing your master degree in counseling and licensing requirements, you may choose to receive national certification from the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). This accreditation is optional, but having it can help you build professional connections while offering further proof of your expertise to prospective clients or employers. Nationally certified counselors may also have better access to continuing education programs, which every counselor should consider partaking in as a way to keep credentials up to date and to stay aware of new research or trends in the field.

As a student pursuing a master degree in counseling, you will need to compete 48 to 60 hours of study. This will probably include supervised time spent counseling others in a clinical setting. Your specific coursework will depend largely on your specialty area and your state's certification and license requirements. Counseling programs are often housed within psychology, education, or sociology departments. This is due to the nature of the major, which requires you to take courses in all three of those areas.

The master-level study for counseling can be challenging. Some programs may require you to conduct research and prove an understanding of statistical analysis. Communication skills are also important in this field, so you many want to look into courses that prepare you to both talk one-on-one with clients and address large groups.

Career prospects are expected to be very good for counselors in various specialty areas. The U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics points to substance abuse, mental health, and marriage or relationship counseling as areas where demand for highly skilled professionals will be in greater demand in the coming years.
