Written by Britt Bertolucci Cao on Friday, August 28 2009

When the Empowerment Tour was in Minneapolis, MN we enjoyed our time at Mall of America with our new friends, and one of the eight sponsor schools of the tour, Minnesota based Capella University. I had a chance to speak with a couple of the schools representatives and get to know how great Capella really is

What sets Capella apart from other online institutions?

The quality of our programs and our career outcome base. The majority of our students are working adult professionals, and we do 100’s of partnerships with organizations so when our students are learning they are able to use what they learn and directly apply it to their new career.

How many programs do you have?

We have 122 specializations and 15 certificate programs.

What programs would you consider your focus and expertise?

P-12 education

Higher education

Mental health

Health care

Public administration

Public safety

Business management

Human capital management

Information technology

Do you have financial aid opportunities?

Yes we offer a number of financial aid opportunities for all levels of study. In addition to a number of scholarships through both the school and private organizations.

How are your online learning programs set up?

Capella believes in a more structural more hands on but still traditional form of learning. However it is not lecture based. Instead discussion questions are presented each week and students participation and work teams are created and very important. This form of learning is an intricate piece of each program.

A number of online school are big supporters of military students, does Capella feel the same way?

Yes, our military students and their families are very important to us. We have a number of programs supporting them., such as the Yellow Ribbon Program and Armed Forces Support Team . Also if a learner is deployed somewhere during their program it will not have a negatively affect them in regard to their academics nor financings.

How easy is it for my existing credits to transfer?

It really depends on what you bring in to your program. However Capella understands most of our learners are working professionals and although may not have “university credits” to bring in do have an extensive amount of life and professional experiences. We count those when considering a new learners starting in a program. Learners have the option to transfer credits, take CLEP exams to cover lower division general education requirements and also use life and work experience toward upper division credits.

What does your accreditations look like?

We are regionally accredited and designated as a Center of Excellence NSA and the Department of Security. We are also the only online school in the US that works directly with the FBI.

Capella has been designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education (CAEIAE) by the National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Capella University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA).

Thanks Capella, this is some great information which will really help with a number of students decision making processes.
