For candidates hoping to pursue a nursing career, online nursing courses may be one of several preparatory options. Nursing courses typically cover topics such as anatomy, physiology, behavioral science, chemistry, and other subjects critical to this field.

Registered nurses, or RNs, typically have a wide range of duties that revolve around patient care, support, and education. In many cases, a nurse is the first and the last person a patient will interact with over the course of a medical visit or hospital stay. Nurses keep records of patient symptoms and medical histories, monitor and observe patients, and conduct various diagnostic tests. They may work cooperatively with doctors to determine a plan for patient care. In addition, nurses are typically responsible for instructing patients and family members about managing illnesses, caring for loved ones, or taking necessary medications.

Nurses may opt either during or after a course of professional study to pursue a particular area of focus, such as pediatrics, oncology, geriatrics, maternity, critical care, cardiovascular health, or neonatology. Some RNs meet the state-defined requirements for more advanced nursing careers; for example, nurse anesthetists administer anesthesia and pain management solutions, while nurse-midwives provide gynecological, prenatal, and obstetrical care. Employers of nurses vary from private physician’s offices, schools, and community centers to hospitals and other large medical facilities.

For most nursing careers, a diploma, associate’s degree, or bachelor’s degree is required. RNs must gain licensure by passing the National Council Licensure Exam, in addition to other state-defined requirements. Candidates may prepare for licensure and other aspects of this challenging career path by pursuing educational opportunities such as online nursing courses.
