Meet Chris
Name: Christina Hughes

School: University of Oklahoma
Target: Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies, 2005
Spurred by personal tragedy, Chris, a now-single mother of two from Oklahoma perservered by immersing herself in her education to finish a bachelor's degree.
Currently employed as a writer and editor at a local university, she initially began her college career after graduating high school in 1969. While trying to keep both a full- and part-time job, Chris only managed to finish a handful of classes. She ended up withdrawing before finshing her degree, got married, and had two children, a son and a daughter.
“I really didn't know what I wanted to do back then,” says Chris, 56, who then began her online education in 2002.
Her husband passed away before she earned her bachelor's degree in 2005 from the College of Liberal Studies at University of Oklahoma. In spite of everything she and her family had been through, the following year, Chris decided to continue her educational pursuits and returned to begin a master's program in adult and higher education. She expects to complete her graduate studies in about two years. Currently, she is simply relishing the distance learning experience.
Why did you ultimately choose to finish your bachelor's degree?
I want to have more choices in the future; education and knowledge give you that. Education is also about enrichment and self-discovery. It was also a challenge to myself: I wanted to see if I could do it, and do it well.
And why did you decide to go the distance learning route?
I originally considered three online colleges. However, I met and spoke with others who went through the University of Oklahoma College of Liberal Studies online bachelor's and master's programs, and I was truly impressed.
I looked at their course offerings and found the curriculum to be engaging and interesting. The University of Oklahoma College of Liberal Studies is accredited, which was a must for me.
It is also recognized as one of the best online bachelor's degree programs in the United States. I recognized that, what I would be learning through that program, would help me to develop professionally as well as intellectually. It worked for my busy life style without sacrificing the academic rigor I wanted.
