Legal and Protective Services Associates Degrees at BTI
As mentioned above, there are two types of associates degrees offered in Legal and Protective Services at BTI. These are:
- Criminal Justice
- Legal Assistant/Paralegal

The criminal justice associates degree at Berks is focused on teaching how you can help your community. This program has instructors who are experienced in the field to provide lessons that you may not find in textbooks. Some of the aspects of the criminal justice system you may study include:
- Crime scene investigation, including interviewing witnesses and interrogating suspects
- Properly collecting and processing evidence from a crime scene
- Preventative security measures
- Correctional operations and procedures
In addition, students may have an opportunity to earn an externship at a police station, police academy, or other locations in the Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, area.
Legal Assistant / Paralegal
The paralegal associates degree at Berks is designed to teach students who are passionate about the legal field but who don’t want to spend years pursuing a degree in law school. The paralegal program teaches the foundation in legal studies that employers may be looking for in new hires.
Some of the paralegal courses include:
- Criminal Law: This course looks at topics such as crimes against the person, crimes against property, and crimes against public order and morality, as well as common defenses.
- Legal Research: This course focuses on the processes of performing electronic and library resources to conduct legal research. This may include primary and secondary sources and proper citation form.
- Ethics and Professional Responsibility: This course analyzes ethical considerations that paralegals may encounter, such as unauthorized practice of law, client confidentiality, and conflicts of interest.

Accreditations at BTI
BTI is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) to award certificates, diplomas, and associates in specialized business and technology degrees. Both the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation recognize the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools to educate students for professional, technical, or occupational careers.
In addition, the medical program at Berks is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). That accreditation is based upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Review Board (MAERB).
