All About NewSchool

Richard Welsh wanted to provide a professional educational program that culminated in a bachelor of architecture degree. So he created NewSchool of Architecture in 1980. The school grew quickly and added both associates degrees and masters degrees in architecture by the early 1990s. In 2001, the name was changed to NewSchool of Architecture and Design.

Through this growth, NewSchool has always maintained its focus on providing a challenging experience for students through an instructional program that nurtures the artistic passion while demanding professional excellence. This includes a “learn by doing” approach to school. And NewSchool encourages all students to pursue an internship as soon as their abilities and circumstances allow.

In order to do this, classes are kept small and intimate, so that students receive the focus and attention they deserve. In fact, NewSchool has over 500 students, which includes nearly 350 full-time undergraduates. This allows the school to offer small class sizes and an 8:1 student to faculty ratio.
