Pennsylvania Institute of Health and Technology

About

Pennsylvania Institute of Health and Technology was established in 1987 to help students in the Southeastern PA region access a career-focused education. They offer diploma and associate degree programs in nursing, medical assisting, and medical office administration.

PIHT also supports their students by providing them with career and academic support services. This includes academic advisement, tutoring services, career advising, and even helping with some personal issues along the way. Alumni may even have access to career management services!

PIHT Academic Programs

PA Institute of Health and Technology offers three different academic programs focused on medical careers. These programs are designed to promote the skills and knowledge students might need on the job every day. They do so using a combination of classroom learning and hands-on experience. Students not only have access to on campus labs, but also on site through externships in their field. For more information on the ways PIHT could support student learning, contact the school.

Practical Nursing

Aspiring nurses may be interested in Pennsylvania Institute of Health and Technology’s Practical Nursing diploma program. The Practical Nursing program helps students prepare for potential roles as an LPN. It’s a direct admittance program, which means accepted students are admitted directly into the program, with no additional application process. The program typically takes 12 months to complete.

LPNs may be found in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, doctor’s offices, medical clinics, and residential and rehabilitation facilities. As such, PIHT designs its Practical Nursing program to help students develop the skills they might need in those settings. Those include:

  • Physical Exams
  • Medication Administration
  • IVs
  • Medical Records Processing
  • Lab Testing
  • Using Medical Equipment
  • Phlebotomies and Injections
  • Other Bedside Care

While PIHT provides LPN training, they do not themselves issue licensure. As such, students still need to pass their state licensure exam, the requirements for which may vary.

Medical Assisting

PA Institute of Health and Technology offers both associate’s degree and diploma programs in Medical Assisting. Medical Assisting programs help students prepare to work with doctors and nurses in a range of healthcare settings, including hospitals, doctor’s offices, and outpatient facilities.

Some of the skills practiced in PIHT’s Medical Assisting programs include:

  • Taking Vital Signs
  • Checking Vision
  • Performing Lab Tests
  • Drawing Blood
  • Checking Blood Sugar
  • Sterilizing Equipment
  • Giving Shots
  • Assisting Doctors and Nurses with Exams

Additionally, associate’s degree program students may work on skills like the ones below.

  • Phlebotomy
  • Medical Office Administration
  • Assisting Chiropractors and Pharmacists
  • Scheduling & Managing Patient Records

These programs may also help students prepare to sit for state or professional certification exams, such as EKG/ECG Technician certification or Phlebotomy Technician certification. For more information, reach out to PIHA.

Medical Office Administration

In addition to nursing and medical assisting, Pennsylvania Institute of Health and Technology also offers a medical office administration program. Students could study and practice the administrative and managerial skills they’d need in a healthcare office setting, while earning an associate’s degree or diploma.

Skills and knowledge covered in this program include:

  • Basic Medical Coding and Billing
  • Electronic Health Records
  • Medical Transcription
  • Medical Software
  • Medical Office Management

Students who successfully complete this program may choose to sit for a professional certification exam, such as the National Certified Medical Office Assistant, Billing and Coding Specialist, or Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist exams. The specific requirements for each exam may vary by state and are subject to change. For more information, contact PIHA or the organization responsible for the relevant certification or licensure in your area.
