Located in central New York, Utica College was founded in 1946 by Syracuse University. It offers 38 undergraduate majors, 31 minors, 21 graduate programs, study abroad opportunities, and numerous pre-professional programs. Students can attend programs on campus and online.

Programs Utica Is Known For

Online BS in Cybersecurity – With five specializations in Cybercrime and Fraud Investigation, Network Forensics and Intrusion Investigation, Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Cyber Operations, or Information Assurance, this program has earned designation as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance and Cyber Defense (CAE IA/CD) by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security.  The Defense Cyber Crime Center (DC3) has also designated this program as a National Center of Digital Forensics Academic Excellence (CDFAE).

Utica College Admissions

In general, Utica College accepts applications throughout the year for starts in summer, fall, or spring. However, Utica stops accepting applications for certain start times once programs are full. The school advises that you apply at least several months before you plan to attend. Otherwise, application and admissions requirements vary by program level and discipline. Students applying for online programs follow these same guidelines.

For undergraduate admissions, students need to submit the following 5 things:

  1. A completed application which typically includes general information and answers to essay questions
  2. Transcripts and GPA information from high schools and any other undergraduate programs
  3. Letters of recommendations
  4. SAT and ACT scores
  5. An application fee of $40

Students need to submit the following 3 things for graduate admissions:

  1. A completed application which typically includes general information and a personal statement
  2. Official transcripts showing award of a bachelor’s degree and all credits earned from other institutions
  3. An application fee of $50

In addition, graduate students must follow application and admissions requirements for specific programs. Requirements vary across programs and disciplines. 

Utica College Acceptance Rate and Retention Numbers

In fall 2015, 5,151 students applied to Atica College. Of those applicants, 83 percent were accepted. Fifteen percent of those accepted enrolled. In 2017, U.S. News ranked Utica College’s acceptance rate as “Less Selective.”

Of the full-time, first-time students who began their studies in fall 2014, seventy percent returned in fall 2015. Forty-two percent of undergraduate students who began their studies in fall 2009 graduated. That same group of students took four to eight years to earn their degrees.i

Student Enrollment at Utica College

As of 2017, Utica College had 4,463 students enrolled. 3,084 of those students were enrolled in undergraduate programs. Seventy-eight percent of undergraduate students attended full time, while 22 percent attended part time. The majority of undergraduate students were aged 24 and younger; 29 percent were 25 and older. Twenty-eight percent of undergraduate students were enrolled in programs offered entirely online.

Of the total student body, 1,379 were enrolled in graduate programs. Eighty-three percent of graduate students attended part time, while just 17 percent attended full time. Eighty-two percent of graduate students were enrolled in programs offered entirely online.

Financial Aid at Utica College

Of the undergraduate students, 2,209, or 76 percent, received grant or scholarship aid. 1,084 of those students received Pell grants from the U.S. government. Ninety-eight percent of undergraduate students received institutional grants or scholarships. 2,141 undergraduate students, or 73 percent, took out federal student loans, and 16 percent borrowed from private lenders.

Utica College Accreditation

Utica College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education (CHE) of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The CHE is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Commission on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation.

Accreditation from agencies like this one help ensure quality programming and instruction. Earning a degree from an accredited school might be a requirement for transferring credits, pursuing licensing and other credentials, or pursuing more advanced degrees.

As of fall 2015, Utica College employed 146 full time and 277 part time faculty members. The entirety of the faculty body focused on providing instruction; none focused on conducting research. Between full and part time faculty, the balance between genders was relatively equal, with a slight majority of positions belonging to women.

According to U.S. News’ 2017 report, Utica College had a student-to-faculty ratio of 11 to 1. Sixty-six percent of the school’s classes had fewer than 20 students. Thirty-four percent of classes had 20-49 students.
